How do I decide on the correct weight?
Your best option is to ask your occupational therapist for a recommendation. If that is not an option, we recommend using the following formula: For a small blanket take 10% of their body weight plus one pound. For a medium blanket take 10% of their body weight plus two pounds. For an adult-length blanket take 10% of their body weight plus three pounds. These recommended weights are shown as you make your weight selection.
What size blanket is the right size?
Small weighted blankets are appropriate for babies and toddlers up to 4yrs of age and are sized approx. 34″ x 50″. Medium weighted blankets are approx. 38″ x 62″ and will fit a child 5-6 yrs old up to an average size adult. Adult length weighted blankets are perfect for taller teens and adults and are approx. 38″ x 72″.
What is used inside of the blankets?
To put the weight in our weighted blankets we use polypropylene pellets, a hard plastic pellet commonly found in toys. They are hypo-allergenic and non-toxic. We also add Polyfill pillow stuffing to our blankets to make them soft and cushiony. You can ask to have this left out if you prefer. Please note that weighted wraps do not have polyfill.
How do I wash my weighted blankets and wraps?
Machine wash separately in warm or cold water. Tumble dry low. Do not iron. Do not microwave. Do not dry clean. If your blanket has bright colors that might run, wash the first time in cold water with 1 cup of salt to set the colors. For flannel, use fabric softener or 1 cup white vinegar in the rinse water to soften flannel and help remove piling.
Why can't a child under one year of age use a weighted blanket?
Previously, thick, comforter-like blankets were not recommended for children under 12 mos of age because they are a suffocation hazard. Currently, the guidelines recommend you do not include a blanket in the crib at all. http://www.cpsc.gov//PageFiles/112732/5049.pdf
What type of fabric are blankets made with?
Our blankets are made with 100% cotton fabrics. You can ask to have 100% cotton flannel used on the back side of your blanket at no additional cost.
